Carney's Giant clause out in the open

Carney's Giant clause out in the open

5/09/2008 1:18:56 AM

TODD Carney has signed with Huddersfield for the same three-year term as incoming coach Nathan Brown, but the axed Raiders star can return to the NRL in 2010 if he wants. Halfback Carney will join Brett Hodgson and the fullback's former Wests Tigers teammates Paul Whatuira, Jamahl Lolesi and Shane Elford at the Giants, as well as former Cowboys pair David Faiumu and Rod Jensen in the northern English town where the breakaway from rugby union began in 1895. Carney has a get-out clause in his favour after the first season. Meanwhile, Penrith halfback Josh McCrone has been linked with a return to Canberra. Them's the breaks Sonny Bill Williams played on for more than 40 minutes and walked around for four days with what he thought was merely a cork before discovering he had suffered a hairline fracture in his right fibula during Toulon's 3-3 draw with Brive last Sunday. The diagnosis means the former Bulldogs star will be sidelined for up to four weeks, but his main concern after the match was Toulon's poor ball control. "Thirteen line breaks but no tries explains a lot," the 23-year-old told Sin Bin. "We made a lot of mistakes." At least Williams will be able to use his time off to show Penrith winger Luke Rooney around, with the former Test speedster arriving on Monday to begin his two-year stint with the French Top 14 club. Wing lends a hand South Sydney five-eighth Craig Wing holds no grudges against his former club, the Roosters - so much so that he will be supporting them once the Rabbitohs bow out of the competition this weekend. "I've got more mates at the Roosters than I do at any other club," Wing said, despite having missed most of the season following Roosters hooker Riley Brown's controversial "prowler" tackle in round one. "Once the season's over for us, I'll be going for them in the finals." Kite black-flagged NRL prosecutor Peter Kite was heckled by men wearing black after Wade McKinnon was found guilty and suspended for three matches at the NRL judiciary on Wednesday night. But they were clearly not Warriors fans. A little tired and emotional after the concert by hard rock band Disturbed at the nearby Hordern Pavilion, the two lads clearly didn't like the look of Kite and gave him a gobful as he left the Entertainment Quarter car park, for, we can only assume, not looking like the type that would attend a Disturbed concert. That was a gobful of abuse, incidentally, not a singular, unified glob of phlegm. Another runaway Dog Former Bulldogs utility Pat Weisner has angered officials at the English club he walked out on by leaving them with a $3200 parking bill after dumping his car at Manchester Airport. Weisner, who had stints with London Harlequins, Hull KR and Halifax, quit the Barrow Raiders in May and flew to New Zealand. But it wasn't until 54 days later that the club car he had been driving - a Rover worth just $1500 - was discovered in the airport's $56-a-day short-term car park. Club officials realised the car was among the 20,000 vehicles parked at the airport when Weisner posted the keys back to them. By the time they located it, the massive charge had been racked up. Joey taking big stroll Andrew Johns will raise funds for the awareness of bipolar disorder by leading a six-day walk from Newcastle to Sydney, starting on October 19. Johns will joined for part of the walk by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd plus a string of sporting personalities, while the public can also pay to take part. Johns will also host a golf day and a cricket match along the way. Further information can be obtained at www.nibandrewjohnswalk.com.au. No Goanna zone It was the type of mascot controversy that evoked memories of Julian O'Neill trying to set fire to Danny the Dolphin - a boy wearing a dolphin costume on board a cruise at Port Macquarie, for those who don't remember the story. Western Suburbs scored with minutes remaining to snatch victory from Cessnock in the Newcastle Rugby League grand final last Sunday. As fans raced on to the muddy Newcastle No.1 Sportsground to congratulate the players, a young Wests supporter couldn't resist delivering a savage punch to the stomach of Cessnock's goanna mascot. A pause … then the goanna fell to the ground. The goey then had to be assisted from the field. Earlier, the mascot had dived into the in-goal area when Cessnock had scored what looked like being the matchwinner. Poms' squad in limbo England's World Cup selectors are sweating on court verdicts before finalising their squad, with St Helens five-eighth Leon Pryce facing an assault charge and Hull winger Gareth Raynor bailed after being arrested over an alleged counterfeit ink cartridge scam. Pryce, who scored during Saints' 28-16 win over Hull in last weekend's Challenge Cup final at Wembley, has been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm on a man at the address of former Bradford teammate Stuart Reardon's wife in July. Pryce and Reardon have been charged with using violence to gain entry to the property, while Reardon is accused of assaulting his wife. Raynor, who would also be an automatic selection in England's 24-man squad, is expected to appear in court again in early October, but "categorically denies" any wrongdoing.
