THE Group 16 MRL competition will be holding its annual junior rugby league carnival tomorrow at the Bega Recreation Ground.

The event is being held to commemorate Centenary of Rugby League celebrations.

The carnival commences at 9am, where 75 teams will compete in a knock-out tournament for ages under 7s through to under 16s.

Group 16 publicity officer and carnival co-ordinator, Janiece Eruera, believes that it will a big occasion for the local area.

“It’s going to be a huge event for all involved,” she said.

“We even have teams from as far away as Canberra coming along for the day.”

Bega Valley Shire Council mayor and Group 16 MRL life member, Tony Allen, will officially open the carnival and presentation tomorrow.

The formalities at 11am will include a presentation to the local history-making under 15s rep side, who won the 1997 Country Rugby League of NSW Country Championships that year.

The team consisted of: Scott Lennon, Steven Luff, Luke Hackett, Morgan Taylor, Chris Ferry, Grant Bobbin and Ben Carey (Bega); Nathan Rosselands, Mark Yalden, Jordan Day (Merimbula-Pambula/Eden); Ken Lee, Gavin Buttsworth, Paul Croese, Bradley Betteridge (Moruya); Lawson Berridge (Narooma); Logan Johnstone, Brad Rendle, Luke Vairy and Joe Brierley (Batemans Bay).

The coach was Kevin Gerathy, the manager was Maurie Ferry and the trainer was Denis Burkinshaw.

A number of the players will be attending the celebrations for a tribute to the successful side.

The team overcame a strong Group Four outfit in the grand final, 12-8, with young Chris Ferry picking up best on ground honours that day. The carnival promises to be full of entertainment featuring the cream of the district’s local talent, so make sure you come along and celebrate 100 great years of rugby league.
