THE Bega Roosters first grade side has kept its season alive with a tough win over Moruya Sharks at home in round 12 of the Group 16 rugby league competition.

The 32-24 victory puts the side within striking distance of Bombala, who are in fourth position on the ladder.

The Roosters played their most consistent match of the year, mixing exciting attacking plays with solid defence.

Roosters coach Mitch Creary was proud of the effort of his team.

“It was a really good win by the boys,” he said.

“They all played really well and we have to continue playing like that.”

Bega jumped out of the blocks early with two quick tries to establish a 10-point lead.

The Sharks fought back strongly and trailed by just four points at the main break.

Young Roosters five-eighth Dale Finucane continued his strong debut season in first-grade, providing pace and leaving the defence wondering.

Finucane was well supported by fellow half Matt Blacka and prop Kale Burton, who led the Roosters charge in the first half.

After half-time, Moruya crossed for a converted try within minutes to wrestle back the lead, as it seemed that the Roosters had found a way to lose again this season.

However, Bega lifted their game a notch to put the pressure back on the Sharks defence.

Fullback “Scrubber” Jessop played his best game for the season, providing an inspiration by repeatedly breaking the line.

Jessop’s goal-kicking also proved to be crucial to the final outcome when he booted a couple from the sideline.

The match continued to remain tight, with Moruya refusing to go down without a fight.

Bega opened up a narrow lead late in the game, with the contest appearing to be going down to the wire.

With minutes remaining, centre Deon Apps crossed to secure the Roosters fourth win of the season and keep their final’s aspirations alive.

The Roosters take on Bombala on Sunday at home in a crucial clash that will decide the fate of their season.

The match will be the side’s last before the finals series, with a bye scheduled for the final round of the regular season.
