THE Bermagui-Cobargo Sharks Rugby Club hosted competition leaders Broulee Dolphins on Saturday June 21 at Dickinson Oval.
The day started early with a luncheon hosted by former Wallaby and Sharks mentor Gary Pearse at the Bermagui Beach Hotel.
Guest speaker was local identity Norma Allen who provided guests at the luncheon with some of her famous scones to taste. Following the luncheon the crowd gathered at Dickinson Oval to support the Sharks in their top of the table clash with Broulee.
In blustery conditions the Sharks opened the scoring early with Joel Anderson splitting the posts for a penalty goal after a good platform set by the forwards.
The Dolphins soon hit back with a converted try to wrestle back the lead.
After a period of mistakes from both teams in the windy conditions the Sharks broke through after fullback Daniel Allen split the line and set up Tim Tarlinton to score under the posts.
The successful conversion sent the Sharks into the break with a slender 10 – 7 lead.
With conditions deteriorating rapidly, the second half was plagued by mistakes and the game became a tense affair.
Eventually the Dolphins broke the line scoring their second try close to full time, completing a successful conversion to put the Dolphins up by four points
The Sharks refused to give in, forcing a heavy offensive attack on the Dolphins line, but it was all to no avail.
Broulee held on in a nail-biter to complete the 14-10 victory.
The Sharks are currently sitting second on the table and face the Narooma Whales on Saturday June 28 at Dalmeny Oval.
The next home game on Saturday July 5 will be preceded by a luncheon at the Bermagui Beach Hotel, with former Wallaby coach Bob Dwyer as a special guest speaker.
Dwyer coached the Wallabies in the successful 1991 World Cup campaign and is highly respected in the rugby union community.
