Sea Eagles look to continue streak

27/06/2008 10:37:00 AM
THE Tathra Sea Eagles will aim to continue their momentum this weekend when they take on Narooma in Round 10 of the senior’s South Coast Australian Football League (SCAFL) season.

The side will travel to Bill Smythe Memorial Oval tomorrow with the match set to begin at 2.10pm.

The Sea Eagles are flying high after consecutive thrashings of the Diggers and Whalers, making them sound favourites to take out this match.

Tathra currently sit in third position on the SCAFL seniors’ ladder and are rapidly closing in on the top two sides.

In contrast, Narooma sit in fifth position after they were outclassed by competition favourites, the Batemans Bay Seahawks.

However, the Sea Eagles will enter the match slightly undermanned, with key forward Brad McBain and midfielders Luke Mundy and Matt May unavailable.

On the other hand, the team will be lifted by the return of excellent ruckman “Camel” Smith and backman Steve Marshall.

Tathra president, Kevin May said that the side was “quietly confident of victory”.

“The boys played really well against Eden in undesirable conditions last week, it was an impressive showing,” he said.

Despite the favourites tag, May said that the team wasn’t getting too far ahead of themselves.

“You can never take any team lightly and Narooma are a side that always step up a notch at home” he said.

With McBain out of the match, all eyes will be on the O’Loghlin brothers, who both have the rare ability to change the course of a match very quickly.

Ryan in particular is having his best season for the club and has kicked 16 goals to become a dangerous scoring alternative to McBain.

Tathra’s midfield brigade has been terrific in the past two weeks and will relish the return of “Camel” in the ruck tomorrow.

The Sea Eagle’s backline played their best game of the year against the Whalers, not conceding a goal after half-time.

Defence has been an area of inconsistency for the side and they will be hoping for an effort similar to last round.

On the large Narooma ground, rising teenage prospect Liam Walker-Eastick will be a valuable asset in generating speed across the half-forward line.

Liam and May ran riot over the Whalers last round, injecting pace and enthusiasm into the game.

The Sea Eagles will be aware of numerous Lions players who have the ability to break a game open.

Rumours have emerged this week that skilled midfielder Col Foster-Nally could be making a return to the league for tomorrow’s match.

“Col has been a premium player in the competition for a number of years so we are well aware of his ability,” May said.

The Gross brothers, David Broman and Jason Sauiluma have regularly been among Narooma’s votes for best on ground this season and will again be a threat to the Sea Eagles.

The last time that these two sides met was at Tathra in round four when the Sea Eagles came out on top by 23 points in an entertaining encounter.

“The boys are getting better each week and this is an opportunity for our second string players to step up when it really counts,” said May.

TIP: Tathra by 44 points.
