Roosters seek triple

2/09/2008 9:52:00 AM
THE Bega Roosters have a chance at repeating history this Sunday.

It has been 21 years since all three senior sides made the grand final.

The under 18s, reserves and first grade side chance now have a chance again.

A blitzing final 20 minutes of razzle-dazzle football booked the first grade team a spot in the grand final.

Earlier in the day, the side was put under intense pressure from a strong Cooma Stallions outfit.

The front row battle between Kale Burton and Cooma’s Clint Stokes was shaping up to be crucial, with both topping the hit-ups count.

At half-time, Bega was in serious trouble, trailing by 28-12.

Coach Mitch Creary said that he never doubted his side wouldn’t win.

“I was never worried at any time during the match, I knew that they could win it,” he said.

“It was all about belief.”

The situation didn’t improve greatly after the main break, with Burton sin-binned for his part in an incident.

Shortly after, Cooma’s Cale Symonds kicked a field-goal to extend the lead to 17 and put Bega in deep strife.

But the Roosters responded, as lock Deon Apps and second-rower Justin Elliot lifted their side’s energy and the momentum began to switch.

Bega ran in five tries in the final 20 minutes of the game to pull the game from the fire and keep their season alive.

“I’m just so proud of the boys and happy for them,” Creary said.

“The win was against the odds and they were really down and out at half time.”

Apps was outstanding for the visitors, running in three tries and setting up numerous attacking opportunities for the Roosters.

Centre John Dickson and wingers John Sauer and Ben Cogan took full advantage of any chance given to them out wide.

“Our backs have been against the wall since round one this year and the boys have responded,” Creary said.

“We’ve had to work really hard and it has paid off.”

In reserve grade, the Eden Tigers edged out Tathra in a thrilling contest.

The under-strength Sea Eagles were gutsy but couldn’t find the final blow, going down 18-16.

Eden will now meet the Roosters next weekend as they aim for a third straight reserves premiership.

In the under 18s, Bega booked a grand final berth with an impressive performance against the Stallions.

The Roosters faced an under-strength Cooma side, with most Stallions players elevated to first grade.

Bega led by 12-points at the main break and took full advantage, as their class outside backs inspired a 32-10 victory.

Second-rower Ned Grainger led the forwards and received solid support from Chris Salway and Tom Newton.

In the backline, winger Brenton Blair was in top form while halfback Jack Rhienberger was impressive.

The Roosters club urges the town to get behind their team by showing their colours as they charge towards the premiership.
