THE Bega Rooster’s first grade side kept its finals aspirations alive with a nail-biting victory over Cooma in round nine of the Group 16 rugby league competition.
The Roosters entered the must-win clash with the Stallions as severe underdogs, but dug deep in the final few minutes to record a 28-26 win.
To cap off a great weekend for Bega, the Roosters reserves (60-0) and under 18s (44-24) notched up inspiring wins over Cooma.
Rooster’s coach Mitch Creary was “impressed” with the effort of all sides.
“It’s great for the club to come away with all three grades winning in Cooma”, he said.
“I spoke to some locals after the match who said that they can’t remember it ever happening before”.
The Roosters were led up front by the Burton boys, Dane and Kale, against the strong Stallions pack.
Kale picked up the three best and fairest votes for the match while Dane also received a vote.
Centre Deon Apps starred in the backline for Bega, crossing late in the match to extend Bega’s lead to 12 points.
The Roosters endured a tense final few minutes when the Stallions scored two quick tries to give them a real scare.
“We seem to try and beat ourselves at times with our defence late in games this year”, Creary said.
Bega’s defence was strong all game, denying Cooma from scoring on a number of occasions.
Apps was involved in a number of attacking raids throughout the encounter and he continues to have an impressive season for the club.
“Scrubber” Jessop also had a strong influence for the Roosters, with his accurate goal-kicking proving crucial on the result of the match.
The Roosters face another stern test this weekend when they take on Eden, who went to the top of the premiership ladder on the weekend.
Off the field, the club has also had a successful week with a donation of footballs to the Bega West Primary School.
Club president, Steven Maker presented the footballs as a token of thank you to the school’s continuing support of the club.
“It’s a way of thanking Bega West for their support over the years, with kids coming through the club and letting us borrow gear” Maker said.
