THE Tathra Sea Eagles have secured a narrow but unconvincing victory over the Narooma Lions in round 17 of the senior SCAFL season.
The win makes it three on-the-trot for the side and they will be full of confidence ahead of the finals series in a fortnight’s time.
In a see-sawing first term, the Sea Eagles opened up a one-goal lead at the first bell.
Ruckman “Camel” Smith stamped his authority early and his impact was telling throughout the game.
Narooma began to gain momentum in the second quarter, playing a fast-running game to build pressure on the Sea Eagles.
Lions midfielders Leigh Do Boer and Shane Gross were inspiring for their team as they led by two goals at half-time.
Tathra appeared to be unusually flat in the first half and if not for the courageous efforts of “Croc” Little, they may have been trailing by a far greater margin.
Narooma kept running after the main break to build considerable pressure on their opponents’ defence.
Tathra’s backline, led by Rick Thatcher and Andrew Neagle, held firm to keep the damage to just two goals.
For the majority of the term, the Sea Eagles struggled to play with any consistency as they were rocked by the Lions pace and tackling ability.
But with minutes left until three-quarter time, key forward Ryan O’Loghlin booted one and set up another to have Tathra trailing by just a point.
As players resumed their positions for the final term, they were met by a downpour of rain on the field.
This appeared to invigorate the Sea Eagles, with midfielders Jason Ainsworth and Luke Mundy getting plenty of the ball to set up their forwards.
Lions forward Simon Mackie lifted his effort to boot a couple of goals as it appeared that an upset was on the cards.
But late goals to the O’Loghlin brothers sealed Tathra’s ninth win of the season, getting home by nine points.
The Sea Eagles will travel to Pambula this weekend to take on the second placed Panthers in the final home and away match of the SCAFL season.
