THE Candelo WGKA Karate DOJO team took 28 competitors to the annual WGKA tournament at Cranbourne Victoria in Melbourne recently.
Candelo’s team had a nice blend of youth and experience, with ages ranging from eight to 61 years-old.
The team’s performances were outstanding, leading to an impressive total of 27 medals and trophies.
The successful campaign for the team was achieved in the two major leagues, KATA (World karate federation tournament sports fighting) and KUMITE (consisting of defensive and attacking moves performed in a set pattern).
Candelo’s head instructor Shihan Robert Graham was “very happy” with the efforts of everyone involved.
“Sedoin Gavin Martin (fellow instructor) and I are very proud of all the guys that competed,” he said.
“We’ve trained very hard for this tournament and gained terrific results for it.”
The event was highlighted by the performances of the team’s younger members, who were given the invaluable opportunity of competing at a higher level.
“This is the first year that our mighty mites (eight-10-year-olds) had the opportunity to compete and they did extremely well”, Graham said.
“For others such as our juniors and seniors, it was our second or third year running.”
Graham opened his Karate DOJO in Candelo three years ago after previously learning with the WGKA team in Bega under teacher Warren Ross. The DOJO now trains over 80 people each week, with all instructors being credited with a level one certificate.
Graham is a highly-credited teacher, obtaining a fourth Dan level in karate.
The academy is open to students of all ages, ranging from the mighty mites to senior classes.
“It’s really good for the kids because it keeps them off the streets and teaches them values,” he said.
Graham trains his team train on three nights each week at the Candelo Showgrounds; Monday (6:30-8:15pm), Wednesday (4:30-6:30pm) and on Friday (6:45-8:15pm).
