ON the eve of the Beijing Opening Cerem-ony, Bega has received exciting news.
Earlier this week, the Bega Amateur Swimm-ing Club announced that two Olympic Swimmers will be visiting Bega later this year.
Australian team members Ashley Delaney and Patrick Murphy will be special guests at the Swim for Life promotion, to take place at the Bega Swimming Pool on Saturday November 29.
Murphy who is 24 years-old represented Australia in the 2004 Olympics in his chosen field of 200m backstroke.
He tasted success at the 2005 and 2007 FINA World Championships when he collected a silver and two bronzes.
Delany, a 22-year-old rising star of Australian swimming, will be attending his first Olympic Games in Beijing.
He gained four gold medals (50m, 100 and 200m back, 4 x 100 medley) at the 2006 Oceania Championships and recently added a bronze (50m back) to his collection at the FINA World Short Course Champion-ships.
Bega Swimming Club President, Andy Willis, is keenly looking forward to the upcoming promotion.
“It’s very exciting to have the opportunity to host Olympic athletes at a regional swimming club,” he said.
“I encourage the people of Bega to get behind these swimmers and monitor their progress at the Beijing Olympics.”
The promotion is a joint initiative of the Bega Swimming Club, Swim-ming Australia and NSW, with the aim to showcase the benefits of including swimming as a part of your life.
School aged children in the local area are encouraged to participate.
Bega Swimming Club coach Phil Harris said that “this is the first time in my 30 years of involvement with the Bega Pool and sport of swimming in Bega that we have had swimmers of this profile visit.”
“I’m certainly very excited by it.”
More details of the event will be posted on the Bega Swimming Club website as they become available. Willis will be visiting local schools closer to the time to invite school children to participate in this historic event.
A link on the club website (www.basc.org.au) has been sent up to allow people to send a Telstra HeroMessage to Delaney and Murphy.
