Youngsters warned by police

2/09/2008 9:48:00 AM
A NUMBER of incidents have occurred in the Bega area over the last few days.

Five youths were taken home by police and warned about their behaviour in front of their parents after they were observed throwing objects at passing cars in Dowling Street, Bega on Sunday afternoon.

The youths, aged between nine and 11, had attempted to run away from the police after a report was made to police by a concerned resident.

When the police caught the children they told police they “were only mucking around”.

The five youths included two sets of brothers and another boy.

At 5.10pm on Sunday police responded to an alarm at the Bega Bowling Club.

A rock had been thrown through a window at the club causing $200 damage. No entry was gained.

A P-plate driver was conveyed to Bega Hospital following a single vehicle accident on the Snowy Mountains Highway at 7.50am last Friday.

The 17-year-old male driver from Bemboka was travelling in a northerly direction along the Snowy Mountains Highway. As he attempted to negotiate a left hand bend the rear of the vehicle started to drift causing him to lose control.

The vehicle then hit an embankment and rolled numerous times before stopping about 40 metres from the road.

The vehicle was towed from the scene.

Police are investigating the incident.

Two local men have been charged with mid range drink driving offences recently.

A 46-year-old Tathra man was stopped by police in Bega Street, Tathra at 9.38pm on Thursday.

He informed police prior to a roadside random breath test that he had consumed alcohol.

Following a positive reading he was arrested and conveyed to the Bega Police Station where he underwent a breath analysis which registered a reading of 0.105. The man’s licence was suspended on the spot.

Police charged a 35-year-old Bega man with mid-range PCA and drive whilst disqualified offences on Saturday.

The driver had accelerated away from a police vehicle in Carp Street, Bega and turned left into Gipps Street in an attempt to evade police, travelling at a speed of 80 km/hr in a 50 km/h speed zone.

The driver then turned right into Bega Street. Police activated the lights and sirens in order to stop the driver.

The driver was eventually stopped about 150 metres further along the road and when asked for a driver’s licence produced a New Zealand licence.

A driver’s licence check subsequently found he was a disqualified driver.

The man also admitted to drinking before driving and was subjected to a roadside RBT, which proved positive.

A breath analysis at the police station showed a reading of 0.100.

Both men are to appear at the Bega Local Court on September 23.
