Extortion charge laid

27/06/2008 9:32:00 AM
A TASMANIAN woman, 47, has been charged, by virtue of an arrest warrant, with demand money with menaces in company in relation to an alleged extortion of a person to be known only as “X” who worked with disgraced doctor Graeme Reeves.

She has been granted conditional bail to appear at Bega Local Court on July 29.

Two others, who were charged with demanding property in company with menaces and intent to steal in March this year in relation to the same incident, reappeared before the magistrate at Bega Local Court on Tuesday.

Brothers Luke, 21 and Ben Fisher, 27, also of Tasmania, had their matter adjourned to the Bega Local Court sitting on July 29.

At the first court hearing at Batemans Bay Local Court in March it was alleged that a woman rang X, who has worked with the deregistered Reeves, and allegedly said if X did not pay her $10,000 she would go to national television and make public X’s alleged connection with Reeves.

It was alleged the two accused, who had a close connection with the woman, flew to Canberra where they hired a car and travelled to X’s town. They then allegedly made a further demand via a phone call. X went to the police, who placed an envelope of cut-up paper, instead of money, at the nominated location.

Police were already at the address and arrested the men outside X’s home.

The Magistrate’s original order that the brothers be granted bail under the condition that they lived with their sister at Tura Beach and not come within five kilometres of X’s town had been varied to three and a half kilometres following the April sitting.

At last Tuesday’s Bega Local Court sitting Magistrate Chris Bone again varied their bail to allow the two men to return to Tasmania.
